A Valve Lifter (also known as a tappet) is a small but essential engine component found in internal combustion engines. It is part of the valve train mechanism that controls the opening and closing of the engine’s intake and exhaust valves.
Function:
The valve lifter sits between the camshaft and the valve stem (or pushrod in some engines). As the camshaft rotates, its lobes push the lifter upward, which then transfers this motion to open the valve. When the cam lobe rotates away, the lifter allows the valve to close via spring pressure.
Types:
-
Solid (Mechanical) Lifters: Require periodic adjustment.
-
Hydraulic Lifters: Automatically adjust valve clearance using engine oil pressure, reducing maintenance.
